Celebrating the life of
Herman Rudolph (Rudy) Shirah, Jr.
January 05, 1954 - January 09, 2025
Herman Rudolph (Rudy) Shirah, Jr., 71, died Thursday, January 9, 2025 surrounded by his friends at Memorial Health Medical Center after a long battle with COPD.
The lifelong resident of Savannah was born on January 5, 1954 to the late Herman Rudolph Shirah, Sr. and Nell Elizabeth Deloach Shirah. Rudy graduated in 1973 from Savannah Christian School and attended Georgia Southern College before realizing the hospitality industry was his calling. He was a proud bar owner for 50 years. Rudy started his entrepreneurship with BJ's Lounge in 1976 and then opened his pride and joy, The Islander on Wilmington Island in 2002. The bar business is where he met and entertained all his lifelong friends. He would do anything to help anyone in their time of need. He and his sister, Kimberly, grew up worshipping in the Faith Lutheran Church, and Rudy was a member of the Masonic Order of the DeMolay International for Boys.
Rudy had a lot of hobbies; some were typical, and others were not. He had an immense love for Unique and Antique cars and received many awards for them at Car Shows around the Lowcountry. He could keep people laughing with his love for inappropriate jokes and unique collectibles. Animals were his true love in life with Doberman's taking the main stage. He was an immense lover of music, and he showcased that by having his favorites perform at The Islander. If everyone was having a good time, Rudy was too!
Surviving are his sister, Kimberly Shirah Fowler (Terry); nephews, Ryan "Smitty" Fowler (Cindy), and Justin "Hubcap" Fowler (Kate); great-nieces, Trinity Fowler, Kayla Fowler, and Preslee Ferbert; great-nephews, Chase Fowler, Evan Fowler, and Piercen Ferbert; two cousins, Karl and Ken Martin; and his best friends, Misty Ferbert (Jarrid) and Tripp Morales.
In addition to his parents, Rudy was predeceased by a niece, Erin "Denise" Shirah Elizabeth Fowler.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Wilmington Island Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make all donations to ASPCA or Friedrich's Ataxia Research Alliance.
"Last Call" .
Rudy had been a friend for more than 25 years. We had not been in touch much since I moved to Alaska but had spoken within the past year. He was a Ride or Die friend and honorable until the end. He will be thought of fondly and missed.

Dear Kim and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. Rudy was dear to me and my family. All will miss him dearly. Rudy and i had many long and fun conversations full of laughter with many of his shared jokes while sitting on his back porch eating boiled peanuts which we both loved. While talking, we decided that there are two kinds of families; one born by blood and the other one chosen. Rudy chose me and my family and we chose him. Rudy was a very caring person and always asked how the children were doing. He will be sadly missed by all, and we will remember him with a happy smile. Keep dancing my love in God's beautiful Heaven. Until we meet again my sweet, dear Rudy. Patricia Morales and family.

Save me a seat beside you in Heaven, My life will never feel the same without you!! I can’t even put into words how much you meant to me. Your honesty and loyalty never let me down. Dear Kim and family. I’m praying for the peace that Jesus gives to you (found in John 14:27). Me and Rudy met when he was 15 and I was 13 and loved each other all our lives. As we got older we prayed together and talked BIBLE together. He loved The Lord and told me he was saved and baptized as a young man. That’s the GOOD NEWS in all of this. Remember Kim that “You are the sister I never had” You used to introduce me like that. I always loved you and I always will, just like Rudy whom we WILL see again.Love always, April Saxon

Sending our sincere condolences to all of the Shirah family. I am sure Rudy choose when the time was right for him to answer his calling to be with his Lord, your mother, father and Erin. As Rudy seemed to do things his own way and in his own time. If you had an opportunity to meet Rudy and get to know him you would know that behind the man was a kind and caring soul. We have such wonderful memories of the times we spent on the dock with Rudy and your dad and the kids running and playing. He was always welcoming and up for a good time. And a good time we had. Thank you for the memories Rudy.
